August 2007 Press Release: Prostate Cancer Diagnosed Earlier Because of PSA
September 7 - 23 The RoboticAdvantage.com exhibit on robotic surgery for prostate cancer at the Western Washington Fair, in Puyallup, was well received. Dr. Dean staffed the booth himself each Saturday and answered questions one-on-one. Visitors to the booth viewed a close-up computer-generated animation of robotic prostatectomy and learned about its potential benefits, plus a video of a patient and his wife's personal testimonial, plus slideshows in the booth. Registration forms were available for visitors to sign-up to receive e-mail newsletters about prostate health issues. Brochures about prostate cancer's warning signs and the robotic surgery for prostate cancer were also given out along with other printed materials.
The PSA Tracking Card was distributed as a free service. It is a simple, business card-sized, card for men to carry in their wallets. The reverse side of the card has boxes to jot down PSA blood test levels each year for the next several years. Carrying the card in the wallet is a reminder to have the PSA blood test for prostate cancer checked annually, then jot down the test result to take an active role in monitoring one's own health by being observant as to whether or not there is a trend of a rising PSA level that could be a significant sign that more workup is indicated. Every man should carry the PSA Tracking Card and monitor his own prostate health.
The da Vinci Surgical System robot itself made an appearance at The Fair during its final three days in an exhibit in the Pavilion. Dr. Dean was there to answer questions about the robotic surgery technology and technique. Adults and children were allowed to sit at the surgeon's console and try their hand at manipulating the controls of the robot. People were fascinated by it.
September 22 Dr. Dean was one of the participants from the physician community in a free, community prostate cancer screening event at Altheimer Memorial Church of God in Christ, in Tacoma. The program was presented as a free, community service featuring physicians, cancer survivors, and other guest speakers. Free PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood tests and DRE (digital rectal exams) were offered for up to the first one hundred men in attendance that day. Brochures and FREE PSA Tracking Cards were also distributed by RoboticAdvantage.com. This event was open to the public.
To receive a free PSA Tracking Card, send us a note through the e-mail link under the Contact tab on our Web site and mention that you'd like to receive a PSA Tracking Card. Be sure to include your name and complete mailing address and one of the cards will be mailed to you.
October 5 - 7 Dr. Dean will be participating in the Washington State Medical Association as a Gold Level Corporate Sponsor with a special booth featuring an exhibit on robotic surgery for prostate cancer as detailed here on RoboticAdvantage.com. This event will take place at the Sheraton Hotel, in Tacoma. It will be attended by physicians from around the State of Washington; however, it is not open to the public. The importance of it though is that more primary care physicians will become aware of the availability of robotic surgery for prostate cancer and thus when men in their practice need referral to a urologist for evaluation of prostate cancer, Dr. Dean and RoboticAdvantage.com will be a valuable resource for their patients to follow-up with for definitive treatment.
Pacific Science Center at Seattle Center hosted an all-day exhibit on robotic surgery, Saturday, June 16. The da Vinci Surgical System was featured on display and actual demonstrations of the surgical technique were offered throughout the day. Visitors including children were allowed a hands-on experience with the robotic surgery equipment. Dr. Dean's staff was available throughout the day-long event to answer questions and distribute literature and CDs with more information about the robotic surgery technique and its benefits for men with prostate cancer.
Annual 2007 World Robotic Urology Symposium: Ohio State University was the scene recently for the convergence of hundreds of leading robotic surgery specialists from across the globe for the Second Annual 2007 World Robotic Urology Symposium. Dr. Dean attended the continuing education symposium to share technical concepts and further advance his skills in robotic prostatectomy from others in his specialty. Course Director, Vipul R. Patel, M.D., is Associate Clinical Professor of Urology and Bioinformatics, Director of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery, and Director of the Center for Robotic and Computer-Assisted Surgery.
Guest Speaker: William M. Dean, M.D., board certified urologist, with offices in Tacoma and Gig Harbor, Washington, is available for scheduling as a guest speaker for civic organizations such as men's groups, professional societies, congregations, and other groups about the importance of early detection of prostate cancer and the very latest in treatment options including robotic prostatectomy. Dr. Dean is one of few surgeons in western Washington who are trained in Da Vinci robot-assisted prostatectomy.
Continuing Education in Robotics: During October Dr. Dean traveled to Detroit, Michigan, where he attended another conference to advance his knowledge on robotic surgery. The conference was led by Dr. Mani Menon.
Prostate Cancer Screening: Dr. Dean participated in a free prostate cancer screening event in Tacoma at The Nature Center. Dozens of men took attended the program. The event was well received and free DRE (digital rectal examination) and PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood tests were provided for each participant. The morning included a slate of healthcare professionals speaking about various aspects of prostate health. Prostate cancer survivors also spoke about their experiences and gave inspiring testimonials. Included among them is Jack Hudspeth, Facilitator, for the Man to Man Prostate Cancer Education and Support Group. To inquire about the group meetings call 253.927.2217.
